What killed her weren’t the numerous beatings
Neither the pain of the break, nor the loss of blood
It wasn’t even the shame and the boiling anger
What killed her was the silence of the bystander
And upon it the voice that said “She asked for it”
What killed her wasn’t the rope around her neck
Neither the suffocation, nor the break of bone
It wasn’t even the string of expletives used for her
What killed her was her own parents’ sense of dishonour
And upon it the voice that said “Maybe we raised her wrong”
What killed her weren’t the burns of the acid
Neither the shrinking skin, nor the loss of organ
It wasn’t even the deformed features and face
What killed her was the hope that she’d be addressed with grace
And upon it the voice that said “She should’ve just said yes”
The #metoo campaign has brought together a vast part of this world irrespective of gender, race, religion, colour, country. This is the true meaning of unity in diversity and it’s a shame that we are being unified as victims or survivors and not for causes that would help the world.
Only if we could put our differences aside as we have against sexual harassment, we might solve many of the problems that plague us today.
Very relatable and so true.

I got quite emotional after reading this. Awfully, dreadfully this is so true.
Nicely expressed.

“She should have just said Yes” or “she should have screamed a no!”
How our societies aim their sharp arrows at the victims and how easily they hit the bull’s eye!
Lovely poem, dear!

The words and expressions in the poems have touched my heart. Somehow I could relate it to the honour killing and somewhere an individual who is living a life with a want to get respect. A beautiful poem.

Thank you! It is related to honour killing, sexual harassment etc, and how easily people just blame the victim.
